Biofortified carrot variety developed by Indian farmer scientist
  • Shri Vallabhbhai Vasrambhai Marvaniya, a farmer scientist from Junagadh district, Gujarat has developed a biofortified carrot variety.
  • This carrot variety, named Madhuban Gajar, has become the main source of income for more than 150 local farmers in the area.
  • This variety is now being cultivated in more than 1000 hectares of land in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh.
  • “National Innovation Foundation - India” has conducted trials for this variety.
  • They have validated that this carrot variety is high yielding, has highest carotene content, and deep red colour, long size, and longer shelf life.
  • He received a national award at the 9th National Grassroots Innovation Awards ceremony in 2017.
  • He also received the Padma Shri in 2019.
