  • This day is observed to commemorate the “Bengali Language Movement” and its martyrs.
  • In 1948, the Government of the Dominion of Pakistan ordained Urdu as the sole national language.
  • This movement helped in establishing Bangla as the official language of the then East Pakistan.
  • 21 February is also observed as “International Mother Language Day”.
