Veteran actor and director Manoj Kumar will be honoured with the 47th Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2015. The award is given by Government of India for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema. 

Every year government sets up a committee of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry for recommending the name of the awardee. This year the comittee included Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Salim Khan, Nitin Mukesh and Anup Jalota.

  • The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in cinema.

  •  It consists of a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and a shawl.

  • Presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals.

  • First presented in 1969 to actress Devika Rani at 14th National Film Awards.

  • Dada Saheb Phalke (1870–1944) is known as "the father of Indian cinema".

  • He directed India's first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra in year 1913.

  • Manoj Kumar  was born in Abbottabad, a town in the North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan.

  • He got his first leading role in Kaanch Ki Gudia in 1960.

  • His Memorable Films - Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi?, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Upkar, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal, Purab Aur Paschim, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, and Kranti.

  • He has been given the nickname "Bharat Kumar".

  • He was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1992.
